Oaklander Model In-Person Training - Theory and Application: with Guest Seema Omar! Learning Objectives & Daily Agendas

Learning Objectives:

Participants will experience how the Oaklander Model of Gestalt Play Therapy applies to:

  1. Enhancing contact functions using the Oaklander Model of Gestalt Play Therapy. Participants will analyze and demonstrate through theory and experience how contact functions enhance a child’s sense of self. Particular emphasis will be upon contact with the body as a focus for expression of emotions, including anger and aggressive energy and the self-nurturing process using play therapy.

  2. Utilizing fun and engaging media including puppets, sensory objects, collage, drawing, etc., to facilitate the projective experience as well as the use of narrative work in Gestalt Play Therapy using the Oaklander Model. Participants will:

    1. Make their own puppets under the expert instruction and materials provided by Seema Omar.

    2. List and explain how to use the 4-part therapeutic process - in individual as well as group play therapy - through theory, demonstration, and practice using their puppets, (as well as others) to learn.

  3. Identifying and analyzing the purpose, as well as stages, of projection in the use of the Oaklander Model in Gestalt Play Therapy. Participants will explain why even the initial stage is helpful to a client’s therapeutic goal and how to identify and address the role of resistance in Gestalt Play Therapy.

  4. Therapists will have opportunities for their own reflection and self-care, including journal writing and movement experiences that are designed for stress reduction, expression of emotions and relaxation. All experiences will be outlined for use with clients following the training. This valid and important objective for this course addresses therapists’ stress - well documented by the pandemic.
